The Betting Hand of Poker

One of the most common gambling card game found in casinos is poker. Poker can be played by two to 10 persons, but an intermediate number of players are best. A regular 52-card deck is used, but one or two jokers may be added for certain games. The objective of the game is to win the pot or the combined bets by holding the best hand or by bluffing - betting aggressively so that players with better hands will drop out.

A Straight Flush ranks first in the ranking of hands, with five cards in sequence of the same suit. The highest straight flush - ace, king, queen, jack, 10 of the same suit - is called a royal flush.

A Four of a Kind hand ranks next, with the same four kind of cards of different suit is present such as ace, king, queen, jack, 10, and so forth until the card number 2.

Full House is a combination of three of a kind and a pair such as three queens and two 5's. Players holding full house hands will determine the winner with the highest kind full house.

A player with five cards of the same suit has a hand called Flush. The player holding the highest flush hand wins over players with a lower flush hand, e.g. a flush with an ace as the highest card wins over a flush with a king as its highest card.

Straight hand is an arrangement of five cards in sequence such as queen, jack, 10, 9, and 8. The straight hand with the highest kind of card wins the game over other players with straight hands.

Other card hands include Three of a Kind, Two Pairs, One Pair and No Pairs, with the hand being ranked by its highest card. A hand of poker usually begins with an ante, a specified amount put in the pot by each player before the cards are dealt. Bets are made, usually in several rounds, for each hand. Each player must join or fold (drop out until the next hand). When no prior bets have been made in a round, a player may either bet or check (bet nothing). Otherwise, he must call the ante (match the existing bet) or raise the ante (increase the existing bet). When players makes a raise, the other players, unless they choose to fold must either match the raise or make a higher raise (when house rules permit). A round of betting ends when all of the players still in the game have placed equal amounts in the pot.

Poker is played in two basic kinds - draw poker and stud poker - each with many variations. Poker players must combine his expertise in drawing the best hands possible and with a little luck surely wins the bet for him.
